Singer Lexa, 29, is hospitalized in Sao Paulo after being diagnosed with preeclampsia. Six months pregnant with her first daughter, Sofia, the result of her relationship with actor Ricardo Vianna, 32, Lexa faces a condition that requires intense medical monitoring, especially in the last trimester of pregnancy.
What is preeclampsia?
Preeclampsia, also known as gestational hypertension, is a complication that occurs in the second half of pregnancy or up to six months after birth. It is a serious disease that can compromise the health of the mother and child, being responsible for up to 15% of maternal deaths worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Furthermore, the condition is linked to problems such as growth retardation of the child, premature birth and, in severe cases, fetal death.
What are the risk factors?
Preeclampsia can be triggered by several factors. Among these are:
- First pregnancy (primiparity);
- Obesity or overweight;
- Chronic hypertension;
- Gestational or pre-existing diabetes;
- Short or long intervals between pregnancies;
- Family or personal history of preeclampsia;
- Changes in Doppler ultrasound or angiogenic factors.
Other conditions, such as kidney disease and inflammation in the body, can also increase risks.
Prevention and treatment
The best way to deal with preeclampsia is prevention. Losing weight before pregnancy, controlling chronic diseases and ensuring a diet rich in nutrients such as vitamin D and magnesium are measures that can significantly reduce risks.
During pregnancy, the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, such as acetylsalicylic acid (AAS), can help control the disease, especially if started before the 16th week.
The importance of prenatal care
Diagnosing preeclampsia early is essential to avoid serious complications and protect the health of the mother and baby. The condition, although worrying, can be managed with adequate medical support, ensuring safety for both.
