Pregnant, from the second child, Ary Mirelle, wife of João Gomes, was subjected to a surgical intervention known as Cerclage, this Tuesday (1). He had also performed the same procedure in the pregnancy of the first child, Jorge, one year.

“Cerclala worked, Joaquim is good and safe,” he celebrated, calming his followers.

What is Cerclage?

During normal pregnancy, without pathologies, the cervix acts as a support of pregnancy to support the growth of the uterus which originally has about 7 cm long and is progressively expanding with the evolution of pregnancy at the end (9 months) when it reaches about a uterine height of 35 cm.

“However, in some women, this tour is smaller than the minimum necessary (2.5 cm) to support the growth of the uterus until the end of pregnancy and in these cases the patient can evolve with a premature and painless work that is extremely early associated with high fetal mortality”, explains Dr. Natalia Castro, gynecologist and obstetrician from fever.

When the pregnant woman has a short lap, which can be an individual feature of the congenital woman or as a consequence of a front surgical procedure on the cervix that causes her to shorten, the cerclage is an option for treatment for this situation.

“It is a surgical procedure that can be performed vaginal with surgical points around the neck” on the bag “to protect from its shortening giving greater support to pregnancy so that it evolves at the end”, adds the doctor.

This procedure should be ideally performed up to 16 weeks of gestation in elective cases after the doctor had the diagnosis of the pathology (short cervix or cervical incompetence of Istimus).

“In the case of the short cervix, as we have already mentioned above, the diagnosis is carried out through the transvaginal USG with the dimensions lower than 2.5 cm. And in the case of cervical incompetence it has been the diagnosis is clinical based on the patient’s front history,” he adds.

In case of anterior trachelectomy or other cervical surgical interventions, it can be performed by the abdominal laparoscopic at the time of the patient undergoing cervical surgery and which has the desire for a reproductive future.

It is extremely important for the diagnosis to perform a prenatal of excellence and always follow the guidelines of your obstetrician.

Risks of Cerclage

  • Premature breakage of ovular membranes, when the loss of amniotic liquids
  • Premature labor

“These complications are more frequent if the cervix is already short, less than 2.5 centimeters,” he explains.
