The detention of the Canadian actress Jasmine Mooney, known for his role in “American Pie Present: The Book of Love”, has generated large international repercussions and rekindled debates on the treatment given to immigrants by the US authorities. The episode took place on March 3, 2025, when Mooney tried to cross the border between Mexico and the United States in San Ysidro, California, to renew his work visa. Despite the presentation of the documentation that demonstrated a new job offer in the United States and a request for renewal of visas, it was arrested by the agents of the Department of Immigration and Dogana (ICE) and kept in custody for almost two weeks.

Mooney reported that her experience was deeply traumatic. At the beginning, it was placed in a cell in the center of detention of Otay Mesa, where she slept on a carpet without pillow or covered, wrapped in an aluminum sheet to heat. The food provided was of such low quality that she refused to eat, with consequent significant weight loss.

Subsequently, he was transferred to another installation in Arizona, where he spent 24 hours handcuffed during transport. The conditions in the structures have been described as inhuman, with constantly illuminated fluorescent lights and limited access to adequate healthcare structures. Mooney compared her experience with a “cruel psychological experiment” and said she feels “kidnapped” by the American authorities.

The actress was released on March 15th and returned to Canada. It was not accused of any crime, but received a ban for the United States for five years, with the exception of the special authorization through an American consulate. Mooney said he signed the prohibition documents under pressure and although exhausted and disoriented.

Since then, he has released interviews to denounce the conditions addressed in detention centers and highlight how American migratory policy affects foreign citizens, even those without criminal history.

The case generated indignation both in Canada and in the United States. In Canada, politicians such as David Eby, Premier of British Columbia, condemned the treatment given to the actress. In the United States, Senator Cory Booker read Mooney’s report to the Senate’s plenary to illustrate the systemic problems in the country’s migratory approach. The actress also stressed that her experience is not unique and that many other immigrants face similar or worse situations.

Currently, Jasmine Mooney is safe in Canada with his family and friends, but continues to emotionally elaborate what happened. He also used his platform to defend changes in American migratory policies and attract attention to the precarious conditions of ice detention centers.
