Author of telenovelas is an example of strength and struggle in its trajectory marked by deep pain
The series “Brutal Pact: The Murder of Daniella Perez” is about one of the most heinous murders in the Brazilian police news. But not only. It is also about the unconditional love of a mother.
Gloria Perez did not have the right to go through the stages of mourning, an essential process for anyone burying a loved one. Always in front of the coffin of her daughter, she had to keep an eye to avoid the impunity of the killers. A week later, he returned to write the chapters of the soap opera “De Corpo de Alma”.
Amidst tears and anger, the physical pain of loss and the shock of her mental health, she gathered the strength to go after witnesses and evidence. She often acted alone, accompanied only by the spirit of maternal determination.
He took the door in the face. Threats received. They tried to get her to give up. She was a fragile woman and, at the same time, adamant in her pursuit of justice.
It mobilized the press, exchanged solidarity with other mothers with murdered children, lobbied lawmakers to get an intensification of the legal punishment for murderers.
As if that weren’t enough, during this grueling journey, he faced torture: vandalism on Daniella’s grave. There have been several attempts to open the tomb. An endless nightmare.
The conviction of the killers, five years after the crime, was a victory, but nothing alleviates the pain of homesickness and, as Gloria herself says in ‘Brutal Pact’, a certain sense of guilt for having believed to be able to avoid the tragedy.
The novelist would have to face another nameless loss. A month before Daniella Perez’s death turned 10, he lost his youngest son, Rafael, then 25.
The boy, born with a rare syndrome that affected his mental development, could not resist the complications of surgery to reverse a bowel twist.

A decade later, in an interview with ‘Quem’ magazine, Gloria Perez was asked about the drama of burying two children. “It is impossible to live separate from it, I live with this, with this pain,” she said.
Shortly before the story, in 2010, the author had been forced to pass yet another resilience test: she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer when ‘Caminho das Índias’ was on the air. “I would put the computer on my lap and write in the chemotherapy chair,” she said.
The admirable strength of Gloria Perez makes her similar to certain mothers of mythology, capable of great sacrifices for their children, such as the Greek Reia, and close to any anonymous mother in this violent and unjust Brazil, obstinate in raising her offspring and, if necessary, face everything and everyone to honor their descendants, dead or alive.
The author has always had the support of another son, the lawyer Rodrigo, 50, who appears in ‘Pacto Brutal’. Currently he is dedicated to writing the chapters of ‘Travessia’, a telenovela that will take place in ‘Pantanal’ from 17 October.
