On the morning of Monday (21), the Vatican confirmed the death of Pope Francis at 88 years old. The Pope, who had been recently hospitalized for more than 40 days due to bilateral pneumonia, was discharged but it was already a fragile health. His last public appearance was during Easter Sunday Mass, celebrated in the Basilica of San Paolo, one day before his death.

With death, the Vatican began traditional novels, the nine days of official mourning. The ceremonies follow three stations that mark the farewell of the religious leader, from the announcement of his death to burial.

How will it be farewell to the Pope?

The first phase of the ritual began with the realization of death, the exposure of the body and the prayers made by the religious. So the body will be embalmed and placed in a coffin made of wood and zinc, remaining in the chapel of Santa Marta for a wake reserved for Vatican members.

In the second season, the body will be brought to the Basilica of San Pedro, where it will be exposed to the farewell of the faithful. Cardinal Camerlengo will be responsible for presiding over the celebrations and prayers right now. After the visit, the mass of Exequias will be held: the ceremony of the current body with the participation of state, government and faithful delegations. The mass will be held outdoors in front of the Basilica scale.

The burial, which constitutes the third season, should take place from 4 to 6 days after death. The body will be brought to procession to its last rest, chosen by the Pontiff himself. Francis will be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, considered the first church of the West dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The coffin will also pass through the ritual of immune, with the deposition in the pontiff’s tomb.
