This Thursday, 5/8, the Vatican elected a new Pope after Francisco’s death in April. The chosen one was the cardinal Robert Francis Prevostwho will adopt the name of Pope Lion XIV (14, in Roman numbers).

It is the first pontiff born in the United States and has held important positions, as mayor of the dicastery for the bishops and the president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.

Prevost, 69, was born in Chicago and acted for 20 years in Peru. Priest ordered in 1982, obtained a doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome.

Shares the vision of Pope Francis On the commitment to the poor and immigrants, defending humility and closeness to the people.

In recent years, the new Pope has faced disputes. He was accused of covering the cases of sexual abuse of the priests in Peru, but the investigation is still underway in the Vatican.

In 2020, he sent a complaint, with consequent removal of one of the people involved, while the Peruvian diocese denies his participation in irregularities.
