The American singer Katy Perry was fined by the Spanish government for 5,197 euros, equivalent to about $ 33,000, after having recorded a music video in an area of environmental conservation without prior authorization. The sanction was applied by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fishing and the Environment of Spain, as reported last week.
The episode includes the production of the music video “Lifetimes”, recorded in July 2024 at the Ses Salines Natural Park, located on the Balearic Islands. The area is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and includes the islands of Ibiza and Formentera. According to the authorities, the responsible manufacturer did not obtain the necessary authorization to use the site during filming.
The situation emerged after complaints and, later, an investigation conducted by the government of the Balear islands. The residents of the Region expressed discontent, mainly because part of the scenes were recorded in the dunes of the island of S’Espalmaador, a place with a high degree of environmental sensitivity. The use of the area for commercial purposes without authorization caused indignation, although it has not generated, according to the competent agencies, permanent damage to the reserve.
The recording of the music video was directed by Stillz, known as works with artists of the international pop scene. In the video, Katy Perry seems to immerse yourself to cliffs, dance on the beach and participate in parties in the attractions of the islands. Although the practice was classified as a “serious” infringement, the authorities decided to impose further punishments, precisely because there was no lasting environmental impact record.
By the way, this is not the first time that environmental issues are on the agenda of filming of foreign artists in Europe. The use of natural areas without adequate legal procedures was the objective of greater supervision by local administrations. Therefore, the repercussion involving big names of visibility expands the discussion on the limits between artistic production and environmental protection.
On the other hand, the singer or his team have not yet publicly talked about what happened. The absence of official position maintains the case limited to the administrative scope, although the repercussion on social networks has mobilized the fans of artists and environmental supporters.
According to the relationships of the authorities, the purpose of the sanction is to strengthen the commitment for the conservation of protected areas, in particular those with international conservation status. The measure acts as a warning for future productions that want to use these spaces as a scenario.
