The dancer Carlinhos de Jesus, a reference in samba and in the Brazilian carnival, recently revealed that it was using wheelchairs after receiving the diagnosis of bilateral exchange bag and tendonitis in the buttocks, which generated “a lot of pain” and left its compromised mobility. The conditions attracted the attention of the public, in particular for the long trajectory of the artist dedicated to dance. But after all, what do these diagnoses mean and what is their impact on mobility?

What is bilateral exchange borsite?

According to the orthopedist Dr. Fabiano Fonseca, the trocanteral Borsite is an inflammatory process in the lateral region of the hip. In this area there is a bagta – a small bag full of liquid – which acts as shock absorber between bones, muscles and tendons. When it turns on, it causes intense pain, especially when walking, climbing the stairs or lying on the side.

“Sometimes it can turn on incorrectly, excessively, there are several factors that can cause a local inflammatory process to trauma. This can also come from an inflammatory process of hip tendons, which calls the hip tendonitis, which can lead to the inability to work in the sense of having pain”, explains the expert.

In the case of Carlinhos, the condition is bilateral, that is, it reaches both sides. “Usually the pound bag is not an incapable disease. If the patient is in a wheelchair, there is likely to be any other associated comorbidity,” says the expert.

And tendonitis in the buttocks?

Tendinitis is the inflammation of the tendons and in the hip often reaches the average gluteum, an essential muscle for the stability and balance of the pelvis. “This tendon can turn on with the repetitive effort and overload of the region. In impact or repetition activities, such as dance, there is a higher risk,” adds the doctor.

That is, the history of dance decades may have contributed to the wear and tear of the artist’s joint.

Do the health problems of Carlinhos de Jesus have a cure?

Borsite and tendinitis have a treatment and, in most cases, with a positive response. The initial treatment is conservative, which involves physical therapy, relative rest and the use of anti -inflammatory drugs.

In the most serious cases, when there is evolution for arthrosis – wear of the hip cartilage – it may be necessary to resort to arthroplasty, a prosthesis surgery that replaces the natural articulation with a mechanic.

How long does the treatment last?

The duration varies according to the degree of inflammation and the patient’s response to rehabilitation. “The treatment is considered long when there is joint wear, but often we can control pain and return the quality of life with conservative measures,” says the Orthopedist.

Can Carlinhos walk normally again?

Despite the severity of the picture, the prospects are optimistic. Borsite and tendonitis alone usually do not leave the patient permanently in a wheelchair. Recovery will depend on the control of inflammation, muscle strengthening and, ultimately, surgery.

“These are diseases that cause pain and limitation, but do not totally make the march totally impossible. With a correct follow -Up, there is a good chance that the patient recovers mobility and walks again”, concludes dr. Fabiano Fonseca.
