Gilberto Gil sues the priest who mocked Preta Gil shortly after his death; remember the case

Gilberto Gil and the family filed a lawsuit against the priest Danilo Cesareof the São José Parish of Campina Grande, Paraíba, for mockery Preta Gildied in July 2025, victim of cancer. What happened?

In a sermon held on July 20, a few hours after the news of Preta’s death, the cleric mocked the religion of African origin followed by the singer’s family, mocking the faith in the orixás.

“God knows what he’s doing. If he has to die, he will die […] What is the name of Preta Gil’s father? Gilberto. [Ele] he said a prayer to the orixás. Where are these orixás who did not resurrect Preta Gil? Have they already buried him?”, began the priest, whose speech was recorded live on YouTube, on the Parish channel. After a complaint and the opening of an investigation, the video was removed.

Bela Gil had already criticized the sermon on his social networks. In a post on Instagram, the presenter shared the news, calling Father Danilo “disrespectful” in the caption of the publication.

Preta Gil died on July 20, 2025, at the age of 50, a victim of cancer. He was in New York, where he had tried an experimental treatment, and was leaving for Brazil when he fell ill.
