Paramount announces closure of linear channels and bets on streaming
THE Paramount Globalrecently acquired by Skydance Mediaannounced the closure of all its linear channels in Brazil. Among them are Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central, Nick Jr.. and the Paramount Channel. The official termination date is December 31, 2025, according to information from Recreio Magazine.
The exit from pay TV is part of a digital transformation strategy. The new management wants to position the company as a purely digital platform, abandoning the distribution model with pay TV operators. The focus now is on platforms Paramount+ and Pluto TV.
The decision has three main reasons: the drop in the number of pay TV subscribers in Brazil, the decrease in advertising revenue and the high operating costs of the SeAC (Conditioned Access Service). Furthermore, the model D2C (direct to consumer) allows Paramount eliminate intermediaries and operate in a more flexible and integrated way with streaming.
Pay TV operators are already being notified to adjust their schedules by the end of 2025.
Nickelodeon’s legacy
THE Nickelodeon Brazil marked generations since its debut in 1996. A reference in children’s programming, it brought series such as SpongeBob, iCarly and Drake & Josh. Over the years, it has adapted its operation regionally and, since 2023, it has operated part of the global signal transmission.
With the shutdown, much of the catalog will migrate to Paramount’s streaming services. Anyone who wants to continue watching the brand’s content will need to use the Paramount+ and the Pluto TVwhich should also be integrated in the coming years.
The audiovisual market is already reacting to the movement, and the end of Nickelodeon Brazil It is another milestone in the profound transformation of pay TV in Brazil, accelerated by the rise of on-demand services.
