At least seven private groups are expected to participate in the first auction of an access channel to the country’s port, Paranaguá (PR), on October 22 at B3, said the director general of the National Agency for Waterborne Transport (Antaq), Frederico Dias.
According to him, potential interested parties are engineering companies operating in the port sector. The group includes national and international companies, he specified.
According to Dias, the group that offers the lowest access fee wins the auction. “We have seven to eight interested companies and ‘players’ with resources, technical expertise, dredging experience and national and international groups,” Antaq’s general director told reporters after attending an event at FGV.
“This is the first of a series. We will grant access channels to the port of Itajaí (SC), Santos (SP), Rio Grande (RS) and another in Bahia. We will work to provide increasingly effective access channels so that larger ships can arrive and the operation can be more efficient,” he added.
The estimated investment in the project in Paranaguá is R$1.2 billion over 25 years. The winner of the competition will be asked for improvements such as increasing the draft of the port (from the fifth year of the concession to 15.5 metres, currently access to waterways is 13.3 metres).
With the increase in draft it will be possible to accommodate larger ships in the port of Paranaguá, which will increase the productivity of the port. Furthermore, the expansion and widening of the canal, the expansion of the evolution basin – an area intended for maneuvering ships – and the deepening of the anchoring area, where ships can anchor to wait without docking in port, have been defined.
In addition to the dredging and expansion works, the future concessionaire will also have to make investments that include nautical signaling services, bathymetry, environmental programs and monitoring.
According to Antaq, in the first half of this year, the Port of Paranaguá was the second public port facility in Brazil to handle the most of the country’s cargo, with 30.9 million tonnes in the period, up 2.6% compared to the first six months of 2024.
