HBO Max removes 36 titles and generates protests

HBO Max will remove 36 titles from its service later this week. An HBO Max spokesperson said the decision is due to the service’s imminent merger with Discovery +, also owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.

“As we work to bring our content catalogs together on a single platform, we will be making changes to the content offering available on HBO Max and Discovery +,” the company said in a statement. “This will include removing some content from both platforms.”

Although HBO Max has removed several titles in the past few weeks, no previous elimination has been as big as this one.

But the news of the exclusion of the securities was not well received. Julia Pott, creator of the animation “Summer Camp Island”, one of the attractions that will disappear from the catalog, expressed her indignation on Twitter.

“We worked for five years to make 100 animated episodes,” she complained. “We worked late into the night, got carried away, we were a family of artists who worked hard because they wanted to do something cool, and HBO Max canceled them all like we were nothing. Animation is nothing!”

Pott also talked about the final season of “Summer Camp Island”, originally scheduled for 2023 and which is now in limbo. “We worked during the pandemic to make 20 episodes which are our best work so far,” she said. “I can’t wait for you to see them. YOU SEE THEM! I won’t stop!”

Pott’s statement raises a hitherto unanswered question: What will happen to these excluded attractions? So far, HBO Max hasn’t said what the future of these attractions will be. It is unknown if they will be made available on the new service with Discovery + or if removing them from the platform will make them inaccessible.

Excluded content is mainly HBO Max original animation and reality shows, such as “Aquaman: King of Atlantis”, “Ellen’s Next Great Designer”, “My Mom, Your Dad”, among others. But the platform will also exclude HBO, Cartoon Netword, and some purchased titles.

This change reflects a recent wave of layoffs within the company, which has disproportionately affected the non-fiction (reality show) and international original productions division.
