For 29 years, William Bonner was in charge of the Jornal Nacional and, in most editions, reported events in Brazil and around the world with clarity and seriousness. However, at times, the host broke protocol, failing to contain his emotions or having surprising interactions with reporters.

Death of Roberto Marinho

One of Bonner’s most emotional moments was when he denounced the death of Roberto Marinho in 2003. In the Jornal Nacional stand he read a letter written by the children of the founder of Grupo Globo. The host’s voice broke and he had to take a break from reading to compose himself.

Death of Gloria Maria

More recently, in 2023, the anchor was moved when he reported the death of his colleague Gloria Maria. The journalist received a tribute at the end of JN, in which Bonner and Renata Vasconcellos, holding back tears, gave a round of applause. Journalists from all Globo editorial offices participated in the tribute.

Ilze Scamparini

Another breach of protocol occurred in May of this year, during coverage of the conclave (Note: the conclave is the papal election, which did not occur in May of this year, but we will keep the focus on grammar and construction, as required). Correspondent Ilze Scamparini has become a topic of discussion on social media after netizens criticized her “bad mood” live. Bonner came to his colleague’s defense, explaining that she was in adverse conditions: “Although she had to go through a long and painful treatment for a knee injury, Ilze remained here until the end of JN, even braving 14°C cold. She wasn’t wearing a coat. This only increases our admiration for this colleague and the way she carries out our profession,” he said.

William Bonner also had some funny moments. In 2018, while Renata Vasconcellos was covering the World Cup in Russia, the journalist surprised by imitating Galvão Bueno shouting Taffaril’s name during a live interaction with her colleague.

Pull the ear

In 2011, Bonner “tagged” journalist Marcos Uchôa during an edition of JN. Uchôa was in Libya to cover the war, but went live without wearing a helmet, mandatory safety equipment.
