Johnny Depp makes a surprise appearance at the MTV Awards

Actor Johnny Depp was one of the surprises of the 2022 VMAs (Video Music Awards), which aired Sunday night (8/28) on MTV. It was digitally superimposed as a symbol of the award-winning astronaut and floated above the stage at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

“I needed the job,” he joked about the apparition.

A similar video, pre-recorded before the live awards ceremony, was posted on the actor’s Instagram page. In the video, Depp says, “I just want you to know that I’m available for birthdays, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, weddings, vigils … Anything you need.”

The joke would have a foundation of truth, since the actor was a couple of years disowned by the entertainment industry for his corrosive behavior, with complaints of burning goods with excesses, lack of professionalism, aggression towards a film employee and especially domestic violence, right to be legally considered a “wife beater” in the UK.

But all it took was the positive verdict in his case against his ex, Amber Heard – and the apparent support of the far right – for the once progressive MTV to become the first American channel to contact and employ him.

MTV did not explain why, being able to invite any actor, it chose that actor to participate in its highest-rated event.

It cannot be forgotten that the award is musical and the musical career of this actor is embroiled in a new scandal, after the accusation of plagiarism of a poem by a black prisoner. A toast recorded in a book about black folk poetry, recorded in prisons, streets and corners of the United States in the middle of the last century, would become the lyrics of a song that Depp claims is a new original work of him.

Even with new and future scandals, Depp has rebuilt his career. After the positive verdict, he shot his first feature film in France, in the role of King Louis XV, and announced that he will direct a biopic about the painter Modigliani, co-produced by Al Pacino.
