IBGE reveals that nearly half of Brazilian homes have Smart TVs

A study by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) presented on Friday (16/9) revealed that almost half of Brazilian families already watch their favorite series and programs on the big screen of a Smart TV.

According to the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), conducted in the fourth quarter of 2021, 44.4% of households in the country use television to connect to the Internet and watch streaming, surpassing computers, which have fallen for the first time. from 45.2% to 42.2%. Both, however, lose to mobile phones, a preference in 99.5% of homes.

The numbers are not exclusive, as anyone who accesses the mobile phone can also access the TV or computer.

Taking second place among the devices Brazilians use the most to access the Internet, televisions recorded a growth of 12.1% compared to the previous survey, carried out in 2019, and made a giant leap compared to the first survey of the topic. – in 2016 it represented 11.7% of Internet accesses.

Furthermore, households with the Internet accounted for 90% in the new survey, 6% more than in 2019. In other words, only 10% of Brazilian homes do not have access to the Internet. However, most of this access is due to telephony.

Another revelation from the study was that, from 2019 to 2021, the number of homes with TVs in Brazil went from 68.4 million to 69.6 million, and 91% of these devices receive open digital TV signals. which debuted in Brazil 15 years ago. Also according to the survey, 96.2% of urban homes and 90.8% of rural homes have a television in the country.

The increase in internet access on TV would already have an impact on other technologies.

The number of households with a satellite dish dropped from about 27% to about 22.6%, for a total of 15.7 million homes – 56.1% concentrated in rural areas.

But where it has the greatest impact is the decline in the number of pay-TV subscriptions.

From 2019 to 2021, the percentage of Brazilian households with pay TV dropped from 30.3% to 27.8%. For 43.5% of respondents who do not have access to pay TV, the service is expensive, another 45.6% have no interest and 8.7% have replaced television packages with streaming services.

The study is complete, but older than the one conducted by the Nielsen company, in partnership with MetaX, which two weeks ago revealed more homes with Smart TVs: 61% of Brazilian families.

The difference can be attested by the growth in sales of the devices in promotional periods, such as Black Friday and Christmas, which would not have been measured in the IBGE survey.

Furthermore, Eletros (National Association of Electroelectronic Product Manufacturers) has indicated an even greater expectation of growth for the most modern televisions in this second half, especially among the 50 to 65 inch models, for the World Cup.
