A scammer posing as actor Johnny Depp (“Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald”) on Instagram managed to trick a Brazilian retiree, stealing more than R $ 200,000 from her.
The case took place in the city of Osasco, in Grande San Paolo, and began with a series of “innocent” conversations on Instagram (which began in September 2020). However, over time, the “actor” began asking for money to cover the costs of the lawsuits he was involved in.
In fact, Depp has been involved in numerous lawsuits since 2018, most recently culminating in the infamous public trial between him and his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard (“Aquaman”).
At the time, Depp was demanding $ 50 million in moral damages for an article written by Heard in the Washington Post in which she claimed she was a victim of domestic violence. Heard, meanwhile, has also sued Depp, demanding $ 100 million in damages. The trials had worldwide repercussions and served as “proof” of the coup’s claims.
In addition to trying to help the actor, the retiree was also fueled by the promise of moving to the United States to live with him. In all, she made three deposits for him, in the amount of R $ 15,000, R $ 40,400 and R $ 153,000.
The money was transferred to an account in the name of Antônio, identified as a Brazilian friend of Johnny Depp’s lawyer.
For this, the pensioner had to sell her house and car and her checks were blocked. It was then that her son suspected fraud and questioned his mother about banking transactions. She showed him conversations with the fake actor on her cell phone.
Once the case was resolved, the victim went to court suing the bank where the transactions took place. You are claiming more than R $ 200,000 in compensation. However, the court found the appeal unfounded.
“Although the actress claims that she was the victim of a scammer, nothing in the file proves her entire narrative. It should be noted that the actor attached to the file only and only the bank transfer receipts, which he did, of his own free will. she will, but she does not join the Instagram profile that deceived her, “Judge Clarissa Rodrigues Alves wrote in a decision published on September 28.
However, the victim’s defense claims that she was deceived and that this must be taken into consideration.
“The pandemic helped plaintiff believe every lie the scammer told, given the emotional shock she experienced, she was just looking for a ‘way out or a change of life’, even performing plastic surgeries believing she would live in Los Angeles, “defended the retiree’s attorney.
The victim’s defense was able to locate the name of the bank account holder on ‘scam hunter’ websites dedicated to unmasking suspicions of similar scams.
This same account by “Depp’s friend’s lawyer” has already been used in another case, in which the subject identified himself as “Dr. David” and talked to a victim for seven months, until finally asking him about money to come to Brazil.
Speaking to the press, coup hunter Glauce Lima, who identified the bank account, regretted that the Brazilian judicial system does not give due importance to this type of coup, which has increased exponentially in the face with impunity.
