the family of George Floyd is considering suing Kanye West after the rapper claimed the 46-year-old died of drug abuse and was not affixed by police officer Derek Chauvin. The news was reported by the newspaper The Guardianon the morning of this Monday, 17.
This weekend, the singer participated in the podcast Drinking samples and said the death was caused by fentanyl, which is a controlled-use drug normally used as an anesthetic. So the civil rights attorney, Lee Merrittresponded to West’s allegations on behalf of Floyd’s family: “While the dead cannot be defamed, George Floyd’s family is considering a lawsuit for Kanye’s misrepresentation of the manner of his death.”
“Claiming that Floyd died of fentanyl and that criminal and civil brutality has not been established undermines and belittles the Floyd family’s struggle,” he added. Subsequently, the artist did not comment further on the case.

It is worth mentioning that George Floyd died in 2020 due to “cardiorespiratory arrest, neck restraint and compression,” according to the final autopsy results. Although fentanyl was found in Floyd’s system, it wasn’t enough to be considered fatal.
Cardiologist Jonathan Rich told the court in the Chauvin trial: “I can say with a high degree of medical certainty that George Floyd did not die from a primary cardiac event and did not die from a drug overdose.” In July of this year, the killer was sentenced to death by a federal court.
