Billionaire Elon Musk completed the Twitter acquisition on Thursday (27/10) for $ 44 billion (about R $ 235 billion), according to several international media outlets.
And the first decision he made when he took over the business was to immediately fire the social network’s top executives: Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal, and Twitter Legal Affairs Officer Vijaya Gadde, among other executives. .
The completion of the purchase came after a judicial saga, involving US justice, after Musk regretted the offer made in April and has since tried to cancel the deal.
Musk had until this Friday (28/10) to close the purchase, otherwise a trial would have been held in November.
On Thursday night, Musk changed his Twitter ID to “Chief Twit”, and shortly after midnight (Brazil time) he wrote on the social network that “the bird is free”, alluding to the bird being the symbol of the application.
The businessman, owner of Tesla and Space X, also went on Twitter during the day to explain that his goal in buying the platform was not to make money but to help humanity, making sure that civilization had “a common digital square” rather than separate platforms for right and left audiences.
“Of course, Twitter can’t become a hell where you can say anything without consequences!” Musk continued. “In addition to respecting the laws of the country, our platform must be warm and welcoming for everyone, where you can choose the desired experience according to your preferences, as well as you can choose, for example, to watch movies or play video games that go from all ages to maturity. “
He clearly plans to transform the platform, and the comment suggests a shift in functionality from a discussion forum and news spreader to entertainment services. Musk said his plans include making Twitter “an app for everything”.
In practice, this application already exists. It’s called WeChat, a kind of “super app” that incorporates several services, including messaging, social media, payments, and food ordering. And it doesn’t have a third of Twitter’s popularity.
Either way, stock market pundits believe Musk is overestimating Twitter, paying far more than the platform is worth. Currently in crisis, Twitter lost $ 270 million in the last quarter.
