Two years after the idol’s death, his family faces paternity trials in court
Since 2016, 20-year-old Argentine Santiago Lara has been appearing in the media claiming to be the son of Diego Maradona, who died of heart problems in November 2020, with model Natalia Garat, who died of cancer.
In August 2021, Argentine TV shows reported that a DNA test had come back negative. But the story didn’t end there.
Orphaned by his mother since the age of 3 and raised by his stepfather, the young man insists he is the heir to his country’s greatest football idol and one of the most famous players on the planet. Public appearances of him generate the fury of the ace’s family.
Journalists from some Argentine channels call Santiago a “scammer”. They claim that he continues to support his version of the case to make a lot of money.
It usually charges for interviews. On a TV in Italy, where Maradona became a god when he played for Napoli and recognized a son, Santiago asked for 17,000 euros, the equivalent of R $ 85,000.
There are news gathering to talk about stations in Spain. He recently appeared on the show ‘Quien es mi padre?’ (Who is my father?), From the Telecinco channel.
He told of a meeting with Maradona in 2019, in front of lawyers from both sides. The former player would have been affectionate and presumably would not have contested the paternity story.
Santiago rejects the negative DNA shown on TV in Argentina. He plans to exhume Maradona’s body for a new test.
At the moment, 3 other young people are trying to prove in court that they are Diego Maradona’s children and, with this, get a slice of the millionaire legacy left by the legendary ‘Camisa 10’.
In addition to the two daughters born from the marriage with Claudia Villafañe (Dalma and Gianinna), the striker has acknowledged that he is the father of three others (Diego Júnior, Jana and Diego Fernando).
