Actor Sean Penn (“Flag Day”) presented Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with one of his two Oscars. Penn personally presented the trophy to Zelensky, meeting him in Kiev.
“It’s just symbolic nonsense, but if I know it’s here, I’ll feel better and strong enough for the fighting,” Penn told Zelensky in a video posted by the Ukrainian president. “When you win, bring it back to Malibu because I’ll feel so much better knowing there’s a piece of me here.”
In return, the Ukrainian president presented Sean Penn with a medal of merit “for his sincere support and significant contribution to the popularization of Ukraine in the world”.
It wasn’t clear which of the Oscars Penn had introduced Zelensky to. The actor has won the statuette twice, first for “About Boys and Wolves” (2003) and second for “Milk: The Voice of Equality” (2008). In addition, he was also nominated for “A Man’s Last Steps” (1995), “A Few and Good” (1999) and “A Lesson in Love” (2001).
Penn was in Ukraine earlier this year to shoot a documentary about the Russian invasion and had to leave the country in March. His support for Ukraine put him on the list of people who have been barred from entering Russia, along with other supporters of Ukraine, such as actor Ben Stiller (“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”). .
During the ceremony, Zelenskyy also paid tribute to other people such as former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the Prime Ministers of the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovenia, as well as the presidents of the European Commission. Watch Penn and Zelensky’s meeting below.
