Jovem Pan’s team is harassed by Bolsonarist militants

A group of journalists from Jovem Pan News was harassed this Tuesday (15/11) by Bolsonarist militants during an anti-democratic demonstration in Brasilia. The professionals had to be escorted by soldiers away from the demonstrators who had gathered in front of the army headquarters.

Journalists were identified with a Jovem Pan badge and closely followed the demonstration, which asked for help from the armed forces to overturn the result of the presidential elections, with the aim of preventing the inauguration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Even though Jovem Pan has become a spokesman for the far right in Brazil, protesters decided to shut down the broadcaster when the report aired and mentioned calls for “military intervention” in the area.

“There is a call for military or federal intervention, that’s what the protesters are saying all the time, so that you can have exactly that,” the reporter said, as the group behind him began to react negatively. “No, no,” they cried.

Reports from other vehicles revealed that those camped in front of the Army’s GQ received a handbook with recommendations aimed at preventing them from being called coup plotters. It would be forbidden to speak of “military intervention”. In a play on words, the militants’ posters speak of “federal intervention”, even though the meaning is exactly the same: a coup by the Armed Forces against the result of the democratic elections in Brazil.

At the time the journalist was attacked, Jovem Pan displayed a banner on the screen on the proceedings, which read: “Brasília receives demonstrations against the election result. Protesters also criticize censorship and the alleged ‘dictatorship of the judiciary'”.

The journalist was surrounded by Bolsonarists, who criticized the reporter’s report, saying he should have “tell the truth”, as they recorded it on their cellphones. “Liar,” a man shouted. “Shame on the journalist of Jovem Pan”. Under the boos, the journalist did not react.

Five Army Police soldiers surrounded the press professionals and asked the protesters to leave so that the Pan team could leave the scene.

Since the resignation of the Bolsonarists, after Lula’s electoral victory, the most radical demonstrators have moved away from the station and have approached Oeste, the digital magazine that brings together the unemployed extremists of Jovem Pan.

The Bolsonarists’ attack on the press has had repercussions among politicians. Deputy Ivan Valente, from the PSOL in São Paulo, scoffed at the reaction. “The broadcaster that sows so much hatred is now reaping the consequences of feeding fascism. But regardless, actions such as those of the putschists must be repudiated and criminalized”, wrote the parliamentarian on social media.

“Who knew. Jovem Pan was also harassed by Bolsonarists at the door of the Brasilia barracks. The reporter came out escorted by army soldiers,” reacted MP Joice Hasselmann, a repentant Bolsonarist who is currently in the PSDB of São Paulo .
