Actress Ellen Pompeo posted a farewell to the series ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ on her Instagram. After 19 seasons, her character, Meredith Gray, will leave the famous television hospital, which was once called Seattle Grace and is currently Gray Sloan Memorial, to live in another city.
In the post, the actress thanked the fans of the series for having accompanied her for so long and promised to “return to visit” the famous setting in the future.
“I am forever grateful for the love and support you all have shown me, Meredith Gray and the show for 19 seasons! For everything… None of this would have been possible without the best fans in the world. You are all passengers and made this ride so much fun and iconic!! Love you guys madly and admire you. This isn’t your first time on this roller coaster ride… You know the show must go on and I will definitely be back to see you again. Much love and immense gratitude, Ellen”
In the United States, Meredith’s farewell will air in early 2023, in the second part of the 19th season of the series.
Pompeo’s departure was originally announced as tentative, to fit another project into the actress’ schedule. In August, she revealed that she would be reducing her participation to just eight episodes of the season, but she would continue to be involved in all chapters, including non-appearances, as narrator and producer of the attraction.
As for the future of “Grey’s Anatomy,” creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes said years ago that the series would end when Pompeo leaves, because there would be no “Grey’s Anatomy” without Meredith Grey. However, that claim has been challenged this season.
To address the absence of the protagonist, showrunner Krista Vernoff has decided to introduce a new wave of residents, essentially performing a reboot of the series. New cast members include Niko Therho (“Sweetbitter”), Adelaide Kane (“SEAL Team”), Midori Francis (“Dash & Lily”), Harry Shum Jr. (“Shadowhunters – Shadowhunters”) and Alexis Floyd (“Inventing Anne”).
In addition, the season also gave more prominence to the already known characters of the series, such as Chandra Wilson (Bailey), Kevin McKidd (Owen), Kim Raver (Teddy), James Pickens Jr. (Webber), Camilla Luddington (Jo Wilson), Caterina Scorsone (Beth Whitman), Kelly McCreary (Maggie Pierce), Jake Borelli (Levi Schmitt) and Anthony Hill (Winston Ndugu).
If audiences are left without Pompeo, this could be the setup for the next few seasons, which would only have small appearances from the actress. But if audiences walk away, the star’s demise could spell the end of the production.
The second part of the 19th season of the series “Grey’s Anatomy” will premiere on February 23, 2023 on the American channel ABC. In Brazil, the series is available on the paid Sony channel and on the Star+ streaming service.
