Pele speaks out after news about his health: ‘Strong, with a lot of hope’

Amid news of his declining health, Pelé decided to post an image of his new medical bulletin on Instagram and tried to reassure fans.

“My friends, I want to keep everyone calm and positive. I am strong, very hopeful and following my treatment as always. I want to thank all the medical and nursing staff for all the care I have received. I have a lot of faith in God and every message from “The love I receive from you, from all over the world, fills me with energy. And also watching Brazil at the World Cup! Thank you so much for everything,” wrote Pelé, who has been admitted to Albert Einstein Hospital since Tuesday (11/29 ) due to treatment for colon cancer.

The Israelite Albert Einstein hospital medical bulletin reports that the former athlete had a good response to treatment for a respiratory infection. “Pelé is still being treated and his state of health remains stable.

The infection was announced after ESPN found Pele had lung inflammation. The sports channel also revealed that Pelé would arrive at the hospital with anasarca (generalized swelling), an edemigemia syndrome (generalized edema) and decompensated heart failure. This information was confirmed this Saturday by the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper.

Folha posted on Saturday that apart from antibiotics to fight inflammation, the ace has suspended chemotherapy and has begun to be treated palliatively.

Palliative care is indicated for all patients with progressive and potentially terminal diseases or conditions. The measures will depend on the symptoms, function and prognosis, i.e. how long the patient is expected to survive. In Pele’s case, he would start receiving only comfort measures, to relieve pain and shortness of breath, for example.

Asked by Folha to comment on the adoption of palliative care, the hospital management neither confirmed nor denied the information. He only reiterated that he would keep the content of the released note.

Pelé was admitted on Tuesday (11/29) to the Albert Einstein after failing to respond to the chemotherapy treatment he had been undergoing since last September, when he underwent surgery for bowel cancer. Earlier this year, metastases were diagnosed in the intestines, lungs and liver, which continued to spread throughout the body of the football king.
