The artist has revealed that she was a victim of sexual abuse by her stepfather during her childhood and adolescence. In an attempt to avoid further attacks, she has tried to shrink her breasts.
βI hid and flattened my breasts. I wore bras that were too small β I wore two β to make my breasts smaller. [os seios] until there is nothing feminine about me. It was easier to go unnoticed. Because, my God, it was awful β you didn’t want to be a girl in my house.”
The episodes made Shania find it difficult to develop her femininity and deal with negative feelings. “It took me a long time to deal with my anger. You don’t want to be someone who attacks me on the street, because I will destroy you if I have to,” she added.
It is not the first time that the singer has spoken of abuse in her residence. In the book From now onsince 2011, she said she interfered in her stepfather’s quarrels with her mother out of fear he would kill her.
She lost her mother in a car accident in 1987 when she was 22 years old. Stepfather also died at that time.
