Highlighting rock music’s lack of commercial appeal in the 21st century, the 2023 Grammy Awards for rock categories took place before the awards telecast began.
The event, which takes place this Sunday evening (5/2) on the stage of the Crypto.com Arena, in Los Angeles (USA), dedicated the veteran Ozzy Osbourne, with more than 50 years of career, the country pop singer Brandi Carlile and indie band Wet Leg among award-winning rockers. Each of them took two golden gramophones.
Brandi Carlile won Best Performance and Best Rock Song for “Broken Horses”. Ozzy took the statuettes for best heavy metal performance (“Degradation Rules”, it would appear the guitarist
Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath) and Best Rock Album (“Patient Number 9”). And the British band won Grammys for Best Performance (“Chaise Lounge”) and Best Alternative Music Album (“Wet Leg”).
After receiving one of the Alternative Rock awards, singer Rhian Teasdale abused sincerity by saying she didn’t know what Wet Leg was doing at that event. The band is still competing for the New Artist of the Year trophy, the official name of the Revelation category, also contested by Brazilian Anitta.
In addition to these trophies, another alternative group stood out in the technical categories. The special 20th anniversary reissue of the album “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot,” by the band Wilco, won for best historical album reissue and best libretto lyrics.
The televised portion of the Grammys begins at 21:30, broadcast on the TNT pay channel and on the HBO Max platform.
