According to The Hollywood Reporter, Roiland used to harass the writers of the series he created
Screenwriter and voice actor Justin Roiland, one of the creators of the series “Rick and Morty”, accused of domestic violence by his ex-girlfriend, has shown violent behavior in the series he has been working on for years. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Roiland used to harass the writers of the series he created, as well as disrupting other people’s work.
His behavior was so erratic that, at one point, Roiland reportedly brought a porn star into the “Rick and Morty” writers’ room, just to show her to the writers. He’s also reportedly been open about having threesomes with co-workers and has been involved in at least one case of alleged sexual harassment with one of the show’s writers.
The case has been investigated by Cartoon Network, owner of Adult Swim (which shows “Rick and Morty” in the US), but it’s unclear if anything has been done about it.
Roiland’s colleagues at the site, who preferred not to be identified, also said that he “hasn’t had a significant creative presence on any of the series that bear his name.” According to reports, Roiland skipped meetings, canceled appointments at the last minute, kept people waiting, or came to work drunk.
His absence is so conspicuous that several employees of the series that bore his name, such as “Rick & Morty”, “Koala Man” and “Solar Opposites”, have claimed that they have never met him in person, or virtually.
Roiland reportedly didn’t even have a good relationship with ‘Rick & Morty’ co-creator Dan Harmon. The report points out that the two never spoke again and, in the few cases where communication was necessary, Harmon requested the intervention of a professional mediator.
Because he exhibited behavior described as “surly, petulant, uncommunicative, and grumpy”, several writers opined that working on the series was more lucrative “when Roiland wasn’t in the room”. This came to fruition in the third season of ‘Rick & Morty’, when Roiland “just stopped showing up” at the office, working only as a voice actor (he voiced the two main characters).
The most recent case of violence occurred in 2020, when Roiland was reportedly arrested and released after posting $50,000 bail. At the same time, a protection order would have been issued stating that he could not harass, threaten or chase his ex-girlfriend, and that he must always maintain a minimum distance of 30 meters between the two.
So far, Justin Roiland has not commented on the allegations. Your case will be heard at the end of April.
