Céline Dion returns to the stage in Paris this Saturday for the first time in six years, marking the start of a series of concerts that has become one of the biggest musical events of the autumn in the French capital.
Dion, born in Charlemagne, Quebec, in 1968, will perform the first of sixteen planned concerts at the Plénitude Arena in Nanterre, west of Paris. The run stretches from Saturday, September 12, to October 17, before resuming with new dates in May 2027.
Her return follows years marked by cancelled performances and a diagnosis of a rare neurological illness known as stiff person syndrome, which forced her to drastically reduce her public appearances.
Ticket demand and fan anticipation
Anticipation for the shows was clear from the ticket sales process. Around nine million people registered last April for a chance to enter the draw for tickets.
Dion's arrival in Paris in late August also fuelled excitement among fans, who have gathered day after day outside the Royal Monceau hotel, where she has been staying in the French capital since landing two weeks ago to prepare for the shows.
Always elegantly dressed, her comings and goings from the luxury hotel have generated intense activity on social media and a daily crowd of admirers outside, whom the star greets and sometimes treats to a dance step or an a cappella song.
Karaoke nights and city-wide tributes
The phenomenon has spread to other parts of the city, where events and karaoke nights dedicated to the singer have multiplied in the days before the concerts. These have included a gathering at the landmark Grand Rex theatre, and two large sessions organised by the City of Paris this Friday, on the eve of her return to the stage.
The impact of her visit has also reached businesses and tourism. Hotels, transport, restaurants and shops selling merchandise related to the singer, including the well-known Galeries Lafayette department store, which has opened a pop-up boutique, are already benefiting from visitors drawn from around the world by the concerts.
A career interrupted by illness
The Paris concert series is also an especially anticipated test for Dion, whose career was interrupted by her health problems. The singer revealed in 2022 that she had stiff person syndrome, a rare neurological illness that affects the muscular system and led her to cancel performances.
Her return to the stage follows a widely praised appearance at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, when she performed "Hymne à l'amour" from the top of the Eiffel Tower, in what was her first major public performance after years away.
