Drinking natural cherry juice can help people manage insomnia and increase total nightly sleep time, according to health experts featured on Martha Stewart's website.
Dietitian Lauren Manaker highlighted that individuals should choose either freshly squeezed juice or versions free from added sugars and harmful preservatives, which could otherwise negate the health benefits. Diluting cherry juice concentrate with water is another effective option.
Health professionals warned that chronic sleep deprivation poses significant medical risks, potentially leading to conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. While traditional bedtime routines often include drinking warm milk or chamomile tea, experts now recommend tart cherry juice as a viable alternative for improving sleep quality.
How cherry juice supports sleep
Dr. Melissa Mroz-Planells explained that cherries naturally contain melatonin, a vital hormone that regulates the human sleep and wakefulness cycle. In addition, Manaker noted that cherries are rich in proanthocyanidins, a class of polyphenols also found in various fruits, vegetables, and seeds that defend cells against oxidative stress and neutralize free radicals.
Manaker stated that proanthocyanidins enhance the body's availability of tryptophan. Researchers confirm that tryptophan is an essential amino acid required for synthesizing both serotonin and melatonin, the two key hormones responsible for regulating sleep patterns.
Clinical research demonstrates measurable improvements in sleep quality from consuming cherry juice. Manaker referenced study results showing that participants who drank the juice experienced a statistically significant increase of 25 minutes in total time spent in bed and 34 minutes in overall sleep duration. The study also recorded a 5 to 6 percent increase in sleep efficiency alongside higher melatonin levels in the blood.
Benefits for chronic insomnia and recovery
A separate study focused on individuals suffering from chronic insomnia revealed even greater gains. Participants who consumed cherries slept for an average of 62 minutes longer each night and reported fewer sleep interruptions throughout the night.
Beyond sleep enhancement, cherries offer broader physiological advantages due to their high concentration of natural antioxidant pigments. These compounds protect cells from oxidative damage that drives bodily inflammation, meaning regular cherry consumption can support joint health and accelerate body recovery following intense physical exercise.
