A company has announced plans to build what it says would be the world’s largest ship, designed to serve as a permanent floating city for tens of thousands of people.
Freedom Cruise Line International, Inc. says the vessel would measure roughly 1.6 kilometres in length and nearly 250 metres in width, with 30 decks housing residences, hospitals, casinos, offices, and commercial areas. Apartments would be sold to anyone wishing to live on board.
The architectural concept comes from Schopfer Associates LLC, led by E. Kevin Schopfer. The firm envisions a full urban environment with residential neighbourhoods, schools, public spaces, and all supporting infrastructure.
The project’s stated goal is to create stable community life. According to the published concept, the key premise is stability: building a place where people form daily habits, develop relationships, and gain a lasting sense of belonging.
Serious Obstacles Ahead
The project faces significant practical hurdles. No shipyard in the world is currently capable of building a structure of this size, meaning the vessel would likely need to be assembled from modular sections at sea. No existing port could accommodate it either, so food and water would have to be delivered by helicopter and small ferry.
The company says it plans to use advanced hybrid propulsion, energy recovery systems, and comprehensive water and waste management, but has not released details on how those systems would work.
Safety is another concern. Evacuating tens of thousands of people from the middle of the ocean in an emergency would be extremely complex. The hull would also need to be rigid enough to support the structure’s weight while remaining flexible enough to withstand ocean waves.
This is not the first attempt at such a project. In the late 1990s, a company called Freedom Opportunities LLC announced a vessel it called Freedom and claimed it would set sail in 2000. Those plans were never realised. The current developers have not announced any timeline for construction or launch.
