Spanish bullfighter Curro Romero has been hospitalized at the Virgen Macarena University Hospital in Seville following a severe lung infection and pneumonia.
His wife, Carmen Tello, confirmed that the 92-year-old matador is responding favorably to medical treatment and could be discharged as early as Friday if his condition remains stable.
Family members of the veteran bullfighter told Spanish news agency EFE that Romero was responding well to the care regimen prescribed by doctors to tackle his respiratory condition. Relatives emphasized that while the admission caused initial concern, his overall state is stable, his spirits are good, and he is eating normally.
Romero was admitted to the hospital earlier this week after experiencing respiratory distress. Despite the concern surrounding his health, family members stated there was no reason to dramatize the situation as medical indicators showed consistent improvement.
Hospital treatment and medical response
Tello, who has remained by her husband's side throughout his hospital stay, spoke about his progress in an interview with Spanish weekly magazine Semana. She described his diagnosis as a major lung infection coupled with pneumonia, but reassured well-wishers that the worst had passed.
According to Tello, doctors initially administered antibiotics intravenously, which prompted an immediate improvement in his condition. She stated that the lung infection had reduced by half the day after treatment began and continued to diminish further on the subsequent day.
Following his positive response to intravenous medication, medical staff transitioned the 92-year-old to oral antibiotics in preparation for his eventual release.
History of respiratory complications
This hospitalization marks the latest in a series of health setbacks for the retired matador, who has faced recurring respiratory issues in recent years. In April, Romero was treated at the same facility for a pneumonic condition stemming from difficulty swallowing.
That incident followed another bout of pneumonia a year earlier, which developed as a complication from a COVID-19 infection. Tello praised her husband's resilience during these repeated medical battles, calling him very strong and expressing complete confidence in his ability to recover.
Expected discharge and recovery
Tello noted that doctors have kept Romero under close professional observation at the Seville hospital to monitor his progress. However, the mood surrounding his recovery has shifted from anxiety to cautious optimism as his symptoms recede.
She explained that if Romero remains free of fever and no secondary bacterial or viral infections emerge throughout the day, the couple expects to return home on Friday to continue his recovery in comfort.
