Disney+ Renews Ellen Pompeo Series for Second Season

Disney+ has renewed the television drama series Una Buena Familia Americana, executive produced by Ellen Pompeo, for a second season.

The new installment will turn the project into an anthology series, shifting focus away from the story of Natalia Grace to center on the 1993 case of Lorena Bobbitt in Virginia.

An anthology miniseries that will cover a different high-profile case for its second season.

Katie Robbins, the creator and screenwriter of the show, will return to write the second season. Ellen Pompeo will continue her role as executive producer, though she is not planned to appear on screen as the upcoming story features an entirely new cast.

Lorena Bobbitt will also participate directly in the production by serving as a consultant for the new season.

Ellen Pompeo is widely known for her starring role as Meredith Grey in Grey's Anatomy, a long-running medical drama broadcast in the United States. Her work on Una Buena Familia Americana marked one of her first major projects following a significant reduction in her screen appearances on Grey's Anatomy. Disney+ is a global digital streaming platform operated by The Walt Disney Company.

The 1993 Lorena Bobbitt trial

The second season will explore the real-life events involving Lorena and John Bobbitt, which gained international headline attention in 1993. Lorena Bobbitt became globally known after severing her husband's penis while he slept.

Lorena Bobbitt stated that her actions followed years of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse by her husband. The incident led to two court trials and extensive media coverage that turned her ordeal into public commentary and news headlines for years.

The legal proceedings concluded with John Bobbitt being acquitted of rape charges, while Lorena Bobbitt was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

First season covered Natalia Grace story

The debut season of Una Buena Familia Americana dramatized the story of Natalia Grace, a girl born in Ukraine with a rare form of dwarfism. Kristine and Michael Barnett adopted Natalia in 2010, stating at the time that they believed she was a minor.

The couple later began to suspect that Natalia was an adult masquerading as a child. The resulting disputes led to court cases and media scrutiny, inspiring documentaries and investigative broadcasts before being adapted into the drama series from multiple perspectives.
