Doctor Javier Albares identifies main cause of poor sleep

Doctor Javier Albares has warned that following an irregular sleep schedule is the single biggest habit ruining night rest. Speaking to health publication Men's Health, the specialist explained that many factors impair sleep quality, but maintaining an inconsistent routine causes the most harm because the human brain functions best when receiving stable and constant signals.

Constantly altering bedtime and wake-up times is particularly widespread during weekend breaks and travel. Albares stated that shifting these hours disrupts the body's natural circadian rhythms. According to the doctor, this disruption can lead to chronic fatigue, diminished concentration levels, and even a higher likelihood of sustaining physical injuries.

In addition to schedule inconsistency, Albares identified several other potential causes of insomnia. He warned that psychological stress, eating heavy meals late at night, drinking alcohol, and exposure to blue light from electronic screens during the evening can severely disturb rest.

How inconsistent routines disrupt body clocks

Circadian rhythms represent the internal 24-hour biological clock that governs essential physiological functions in humans, including sleep-wake cycles, hormone production, core body temperature, and metabolism. When individuals drastically shift their sleep schedules between weekdays and weekends, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as social jetlag, the brain struggles to synchronize these crucial biological processes. Men's Health, an international lifestyle publication covering wellness, fitness, and medical guidance, frequently reports on how routine disruption impairs cognitive performance.

Medical experts note that evening exposure to blue light emitted by smartphones, tablets, and television screens interferes with the pineal gland's ability to release melatonin, the primary hormone responsible for signaling sleep. Consuming heavy food right before bed keeps the digestive system active when it should be resting, while alcohol fragments sleep cycles and prevents deep restorative sleep stages.

Risks associated with smartwatch sleep tracking

The advice from Albares comes alongside previous warnings from psychologist Roser Gort regarding modern sleep monitoring habits. Gort cautioned against relying on smartwatches and wearable trackers to measure sleep quality every night, explaining that tracking bedtime metrics can actually trigger anxiety.

Wearable smartwatches and fitness bands monitor movement and heart rate patterns to estimate nightly sleep duration and sleep phases. While health tracking devices are designed to provide useful insights, health professionals observe that fixating on sleep scores can induce unnecessary worry, making it even harder for individuals to fall asleep naturally.
