Professional dog trainer Annie-Mae Levy has identified six dog breeds that can live comfortably in apartments without needing a large fenced yard.
Writing for Parade Pets, Levy explained that the physical size of a home does not determine how comfortable a dog will be. Even smaller breeds require regular physical activity, daily walks, interactive play, mental stimulation, and attention from their owners to thrive.
According to Levy, fulfilling these core daily requirements allows certain breeds to settle happily into urban environments or smaller living spaces without requiring private outdoor access.
Greyhounds and Chihuahuas in Small Spaces
The greyhound ranks as the fastest dog breed in the world, yet Levy noted that it does not require an expansive outdoor area. Despite their athletic speed, greyhounds maintain a calm disposition indoors and spend much of their time lounging at home.
Levy said that one good sprint each day is typically enough to keep a greyhound satisfied. Owners can provide mental stimulation through treat-dispensing puzzles, indoor search games, and short home training routines. Historically bred as sighthounds for speed and hunting, greyhounds are known for their gentle temperament and lean physical build.
Chihuahuas also adapt exceptionally well to apartment life because their compact size requires minimal indoor space. Levy pointed out that while chihuahuas must go on daily walks like any other breed, having a private garden is not necessary for them to lead a full life.
Levy warned that owners living on upper floors may face challenges during the puppy housebreaking stage. Once potty training is established, however, chihuahuas require little direct access to the outdoors beyond routine walks. Originating in Mexico, the chihuahua is recognized by major kennel clubs as the smallest companion dog breed in the world.
Flat-Faced Breeds and Urban Living
French bulldogs adapt easily to city life and apartment living, though their anatomy requires specific care. Because their flat faces make them more vulnerable to overheating, Levy advised that several short exercise sessions suit them better than extended physical exertion.
Levy recommended scheduling outdoor walks during cooler hours of the day and relying on simple indoor games to maintain physical activity. French bulldogs belong to the brachycephalic group of dogs, characterized by shortened muzzles and compact body structures originally bred as companion animals in nineteenth-century Europe.
Pugs similarly thrive in smaller spaces without needing extensive exercise grounds. Levy explained that these confident small dogs adjust well to urban surroundings, where a leisurely stroll, time for sniffing, and relaxing on a sofa fully satisfy their daily routine.
According to Levy, one or two daily walks with ample opportunities to explore and sniff their surroundings are usually sufficient for a pug. During hot weather, owners should avoid excessive outdoor exertion and instead engage dogs with indoor foraging tasks and interactive games. Pugs are an ancient toy breed known for their wrinkled muzzles and squatted posture.
Companion Breeds and Indoor Exercise
Cavalier King Charles spaniels are affectionate and flexible dogs that adjust well to diverse living arrangements. Levy noted that they remain comfortable as long as they receive regular walks on a leash, dedicated sniffing time, and opportunities to explore safe parks and neighborhoods.
Because the breed is highly people-oriented, socialization and frequent interaction with their owners remain essential for their well-being. Classified within the toy dog group, Cavalier King Charles spaniels were named after King Charles II of Great Britain and are prized for their gentle, affectionate nature.
Shih tzus generally prefer staying close to their owners inside the home rather than spending hours running outdoors. Levy stated that a few short trips outside each day alongside indoor playtime are generally enough to keep the breed content.
Like other flat-faced breeds, shih tzus suffer in extreme heat and should stay indoors during hot weather. Levy suggested playing games of fetch and hiding treats inside the house to keep them active. For apartment dwellers, an enclosed, secure balcony outfitted with special artificial lawn grass can serve as a supervised toilet area. The shih tzu is an ancient toy breed originally bred for royal courts in China.
Dog Behavior and Vocalization Patterns
In additional guidance on canine behavior, Levy highlighted seven things a dog never forgets about its owner. She noted that dogs retain memories not only of major life events, but also of the small daily routines and actions performed by their human companions.
Separately, canine experts identified dog breeds that rarely bark, highlighting the French bulldog and greyhound alongside the basenji. The basenji, an ancient hunting dog originating from Central Africa, is widely known as the barkless dog due to the unique structure of its larynx.
