Cult science fiction film Donnie Darko is getting an official continuation written by original director Richard Kelly, launching as an 800-page novel at the end of this year.

Donnie Darko will receive an official sequel.

The upcoming book, titled The Philosophy of Time Travel, will serve as an official sequel to the 2001 movie and will be published in a found-documents format.

The story focuses on Donnie's parents, Rose and Eddie, as they attempt to understand what happened to their son. Both parents embark on separate investigations into the mysterious events surrounding his life.

Donnie Darko originally arrived in cinemas 25 years ago, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a troubled teenager who narrowly survives a bizarre accident involving a fallen jet engine. Guided by a mysterious figure in a dark rabbit costume named Frank, Donnie begins experiencing visions of impending doom and the mechanics of time travel.

Although the film experienced a quiet theatrical debut, it grew into a major cult classic through home video releases and word-of-mouth discussion, becoming one of the defining dark science fiction movies of the early 2000s.

A novel based on found documents

Kelly designed the new 800-page novel using a collection of fictional documents, records, and reports that piece together the narrative. The project represents a fresh start for the franchise, as Kelly does not consider the 2009 film S. Darko to be part of his story.

The 2009 spin-off film focused on Donnie's younger sister Samantha and was created entirely without Kelly's involvement. It received overwhelmingly negative reviews from film critics and viewers alike, and Kelly has repeatedly expressed his rejection of that release over the years.

The title of the new novel holds special significance for fans of the original movie. In the 2001 film, The Philosophy of Time Travel was the title of a fictional book given to Donnie by his science teacher, explaining tangent universes and temporal portals. Kelly is now using that exact title for his real-world sequel novel.

By using a found-documents format, the novel presents primary source material such as letters, official records, and personal notes. This format allows readers to investigate the mystery alongside Donnie's parents as they search for answers.

Future screen adaptations

The upcoming book publication could mark just the beginning of a broader revival for the franchise. Kelly plans to expand the Donnie Darko universe further, starting with a potential animated adaptation of the novel and followed by a new live-action feature film.

The storyline of the new book advances almost three decades from the events of the 2001 original. This timeline shift leaves the door open for original cast members and characters to return in future film adaptations.

For now, The Philosophy of Time Travel provides fans with their first opportunity in a quarter of a century to revisit the story under the direct control of its original creator.
