Dua Lipa revealed in Vogue Italia that she has abandoned former perfectionism to embrace real life and explore new themes in her songwriting.

Dua Lipa opens up on perfectionism in Vogue Italia cover

British singer Dua Lipa has featured on the cover of Vogue Italia for September, reflecting on her personal evolution away from perfectionism.

At 31 years old, the singer acknowledged that her approach to music and life has changed as she leaves behind the strict need for control that marked her earlier career. The cover feature comes after a major milestone in her personal life following her recent marriage to actor Callum Turner.

Lipa also spoke about her close connection to Italy, where she held part of her recent wedding celebrations. Vogue Italia highlighted a more personal side of the artist, focused on enjoying small moments and accepting unexpected situations.

Taking risks on stage in Milan

Recalling a tour performance in Milan, Lipa discussed how her perspective on professional challenges has evolved over time. During the show, she took the stage to perform A far l'amore comincia tu, a classic hit by iconic Italian singer Raffaella Carrà.

Singing in another language and performing such a well known local song represented a major risk for the artist. However, she decided to take the chance and let herself be guided by the audience's reaction.

Looking back at the performance, Lipa admitted that choosing local tracks for different cities during the tour involved taking big risks. She noted that earlier in her career she likely would not have made that choice because she was too much of a perfectionist. Now, she has learned to accept that not everything needs to go exactly as planned.

Prioritising real life over control

Lipa explained that leaving behind the urge to control every detail is a shift she made after her twenties. At 31, her priorities have focused more on human and real experiences, while learning to forgive herself and practice greater self-compassion.

Her marriage to Turner and her tie to Italy form a central part of the interview, where she discussed the importance of finding a balance between her professional life and personal life. Vogue Italia noted her special bond with the country, which served as a backdrop for part of her recent nuptials.

Shifting inspiration in songwriting

Embracing what she described as the discontinuity of life, Lipa said she feels more comfortable accepting spontaneous changes instead of having everything planned. She recognized that she is having much more fun as a result, following years of international success, major tours, and constant public exposure.

This new outlook is also shaping her approach to writing music. Having established a stable relationship, Lipa explained that she wants to explore new ways to write about love.

While she previously found creative inspiration primarily in heartbreak, she is now interested in exploring what happens when love is truly found, focusing on its quieter and everyday aspects. The cover presents a different image of Lipa compared to the pop superstar persona audiences usually see on stage.
