Emma Roberts has explained her decision to wear an unconventional, horror-inspired wedding gown when she married fellow actor Cody John, revealing that she deliberately aimed to look like a ghost.
The 35-year-old star spoke about her bridal styling during an appearance on the Sibling Revelry podcast with hosts Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson, discussing the ceremony held in Sun Valley, Idaho, on July 25.
Roberts explained that she wanted a horror aesthetic for the event, choosing a vintage lace design that fitted closely to her body. She said she told others she wanted to look like a haunted doll, noting that although people found the ambition strange, the eerie style was true to her personal brand.
The actress also revealed that the fabric had been steeped in tea to produce its subtle pinkish tone. Addressing the reaction to her spectral appearance, Roberts said that while people considered it odd for a bride to look like a ghost, she loved the gown, had no regrets, and felt the experience was completely magical.
Crafting the custom Monique Lhuillier gown
The bespoke garment was created by fashion designer Monique Lhuillier, who spent nine months crafting the elaborate bridal piece. The construction required 25 metres of fabric, which were specially dyed in a custom shade to achieve the exact colouring Roberts wanted for the ceremony.
Lhuillier described the gown in a social media post, stating that every detail was conceived to mirror the natural spirit of the bride. The designer highlighted the custom vintage rose tone, hand-draped silk chiffon, sculpted corsetry, and delicate lace work incorporated throughout the dress.
The outfit was also designed for versatility and transformation. It included a removable one-shoulder wrap crafted from raw French lace, a silk tulle veil, and an extended train layer. Thanks to its detachable components, the ensemble could be converted into five different pieces across the wedding day.
Horror credentials and Hollywood background
Roberts is well known for embracing the macabre across her acting career, most notably through her frequent starring roles in the television anthology series American Horror Story. The actress, who began her career in entertainment as a child, has regularly leaned into darker, campy roles on screen that match the gothic mood of her bridal look.
Her candid wedding discussion took place on Sibling Revelry, an interview podcast launched by Hollywood siblings Kate and Oliver Hudson to explore family dynamics and life milestones with high-profile guests. Roberts celebrated her marriage to John in Sun Valley, a scenic resort area in central Idaho that provided the setting for the summer ceremony.
