FIFA has named Argentine footballer Lionel Messi, who is now a striker for Paris Saint-Germain, the best player of 2022. The awards ceremony was held on Tuesday night in Paris. Messi’s teammate Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid’s French striker Karim Benzema were also among the top three athletes.
Messi, together with the Argentina national team, won the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 and became the best player in the tournament. The football player scored eight goals in the world championship. Mbappe was voted top scorer with nine goals. Benzema, together with Real Madrid, won the Spanish Championship and the Champions League in 2022 and became the top scorer in both competitions.

FIFA’s symbolic team of the year includes Belgian goalkeeper Thibault Courtois, Portuguese Juan Cancelo, Dutchman Virgil van Dijk, Moroccan Ashraf Hakimi, Brazilian Casemiro, Belgian Kevin de Bruyne, Croat Luka Modric, Norwegian Erling Haaland, as well as the previously mentioned Messi, Mbappe and Benzema. The best player of the year in women’s football for the second time in a row was the Spaniard Alexia Putellas, who plays for Barcelona.
The FIFA Best Player Award has been presented since 2017. Messi received the prize for the second time. Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and Robert Lewandowski of Poland have also won the award twice. Once the prize was won by Croatian Luka Modric.
