Will we see the actor in the future of the UCM? “I don’t need to be in Marvel, I’m Nic Cage”
Nicolas Cage is the man with a thousand faces, has participated in more than 100 movies and has become the king of the Internet meme. The character has come to eat the actor and, in his latest films for some time now, Nicolas Cage plays Nicolas Cage every time he’s in a movie. Sometimes literally, as in ‘The unbearable weight of a colossal talent’.
The interpreter has been awarded the Variety Legend at the Miami Festival and, during the award acceptance speech and the subsequent press conference, Cage reviewed his extensive career (even for some titles that did not come to fruition) and gave his vision of superhero moviesa genre that has transited in the past and to which many people would like to return in the future.
On the superhero movies and Marvel’s UCM, Cage thinks: “I have to be nice to Marvel movies, because I named myself after a Stan Lee character named Luke Cage. What am I going to do, criticize Marvel movies? Stan Lee is my surreal father. He named me. I understand what the frustration is. I understand. But I think there is plenty of room for everyone. I’m watching movies like ‘Tár’. I’m watching all kinds of art and independent movies. I think there’s plenty of room for everyone”.
However, when asked if he would be interested in joining the UCM, Cage replies: “I don’t need to be in Marvel, I’m Nic Cage“. And it is not the first door of a mega-billion dollar franchise that has closed. Just a couple of months ago, Nicolas Cage made it clear that he has no interest in Star Wars: “I am a trekkie. My place is the Enterprise. My family is Star Trek.”
However, in the 90s he was about to become one of the most popular superheroes in the world of cinema: Superman. The actor is still not very clear why ‘Superman Lives’, Tim Burton’s DC movieIt never came to fruition. Although he has his suspicions.
“They wanted Renny Harlin [‘Deep Blue Sea’] make the movie. I sat down with Renny. She was shooting something else, she came to the trailer and we talked. I liked Renny… but I thought if she was going to do this, she’d have to hit the bull’s-eye,” Cage explained. “I said, this has to be for Tim Burton. I called Tim and said, ‘Would you do this?’ Tim didn’t choose me, I chose Tim, and Tim said yes. He loved what he did with Michael [Keaton] and Batman, and I was a huge fan.”
As for why ‘Superman Lives’ was cancelled, Cage points to the failure of another movie: “I love ‘Mars Attacks’‘. I thought ‘Mars Attacks’ was just a fantastic and innovative movie. He is a pioneer! But in the studio they were scared. Warner Bros had lost a lot of money on the film.. These movies that are really weird, that challenge and lead the way, upset a lot of people.”
It’s a shame, because Cage really enjoyed the character they were building: “He was more of an 80s Superman with long black samurai hair. I thought he was going to be a very different Superman, kind of emo, but we never quite got it.“.
