Now Charlotte will be able to become the Countess of Edinburgh (like her great-grandmother who bore this title after she married Prince Philip) only after the death of Prince Edward and his wife Sophie.
Another title Charlotte may have in the future is Princess Royal, traditionally reserved for the eldest daughter of a monarch. As with the title of Duke of Edinburgh, the title of Princess Royal is a title for life. And this means that Charlotte cannot become her while Princess Anne is alive. Royal historians also note that Charlotte’s chances of automatically becoming a royal princess are extremely small in any case. For example, Princess Anne had to wait 22 years after the death of her predecessor before Elizabeth II granted her this title.
Recall that the current Princess Charlotte fourth in line to the throne – after her grandfather, now the reigning king, father – Prince William and older brother George. This order will change when George marries and has children of his own – they will move Charlotte and her younger brother Prince Louis to the throne.
