Streaming platform Paramount+ will launch a new “Base Plan”, exclusive to mobile devices such as cell phones and tablets, at a reduced cost. The launch will take place on April 18, only in Brazil and Mexico.
“This new offering is part of our strategy to grow Paramount+,” said Marco Nobili, international general manager of Paramount+, in a statement. “With tiered pricing options, Paramount+ will reach even more subscribers, serve diverse customer choices and expand our direct-to-consumer global distribution.”
Nobili further said that “as mobile entertainment consumption increases worldwide, a mobile-only option will make our programming more accessible to our audience in countries where mobile is the primary device.”
According to company data, more than 50% of the online population in Mexico and Brazil use smartphones to access streaming services.
Paramount+’s move follows a similar strategy to Netflix, which launched its first mobile-only plan in India in 2019 and then expanded to other markets.
In Brazil, the Paramount+ mobile exclusive plan will cost BRL 14.90 per month or BRL 133.90 per year. The standard service costs BRL 19.90 per month or BRL 178.90 per year.
“The competitively priced plan will allow subscribers to stream the service’s mountain of entertainment to one mobile or tablet device at a time, uninterrupted and commercial-free,” Paramount+’s statement said.
Paramount+ ended 2022 with nearly 56 million subscribers, a number boosted by the success of “Top Gun: Maverick.” Collectively, Paramount Global (combined with the other services in the conglomerate) has reached more than 77 million streaming subscribers worldwide by the end of 2022.
