Creator of beloved characters across the country, Mauricio de Sousa wants to join the ABL “so that children and young people get to know our literature”
One of the greatest names in national literature, Mauricio de Sousa grew up reading works by great Brazilian authors. Now the creator of Monica’s Gang seeks to be immortalized alongside some of these names, when applying for the Brazilian Academy of Letters (GLA).
As confirmed by the team of the great Brazilian comic artist, mauricio sent a letter to the president of the GLA, Merval Pereira, on the 10th of March. In the official request by correspondence, Sousa applied for seat 8 of the Academyformerly occupied by the teacher Cleonice Berardinelliwho died on January 31, aged 106.
This candidacy is to join efforts with all academics to show the importance of this secular entity so that children and young people get to know more about our literature and the great authors who are there and have been there”, said the cartoonist.
Already a member of Paulista Academy of Letters, Mauricio de Sousa was born in 1935, into a family of storytellers from Santa Isabel, in São Paulo. In 1959, he published his first comic, about fringe and your dog bidu. Later, in 1970, he launched the magazine Monica and today he owns a studio with more than 400 characters.
When I was young, after I became literate with comics, I read a book a day and the great Brazilian writers were my company and helped me to be what I am today. I want to return this affection with a lot of work in favor of Brazilian authors and also of comics”, completed the artist.
It is interesting to point out that, in addition to the great national novels, comics are extensively studied in Brazilian schools. One of the greatest representatives of the literary genre in the country, Mauricio de Sousa it was, is and will continue to be present in the lives of generations.
