A producer of “Everybody Hates Chris” told lead star Tyler James Williams that he probably would never find another job in Hollywood after the series ended. The revelation was made by the actor himself in an interview with GQ magazine.
“I’ll never see you as another character and you’ll probably never work again,” Williams recalled of the producer’s quip. “I was like, ‘Damn, did you actually look at me and say that?'” He continued.
The actor says maybe the producer was just joking, but that it didn’t feel like a joke.
After the series ended, Williams tried to find her place in Hollywood. “I realized at 17 that I didn’t like the path I was on,” she said. “So I decided to stop and change. I found a really good acting coach and turned down a lot of things that were offered to me.”
After some time, he landed a leading role in ‘Dear White People’ and also made some appearances in the series ‘The Walking Dead’ and ‘Criminal Minds’ as well as the films ‘An Extra Wedding’ (2019) and ‘United States against Billie Holiday” (2021).
But even with this change in his career, he says he still feels the pressure of the success and exposure he enjoyed as a child.
“I’m still triggered by things that are part of everyone’s childhood,” he said. “Every time someone approaches me, whether or not they recognize me, what it tells me at that moment is that I’ve been seen. I have to be active, immediately, because someone is watching.”
Williams explained that he needed therapy to be able to rebuild the boundaries of his life.
He currently stars in the comedy series ‘Abbott Elementary’ which has already earned him Golden Globe and Emmy nominations. The role also helped him avoid childhood success and make him a social media heartthrob.
“A lot of the work I do takes place in the past, because I look like a black man from any era,” the actor explained. “This is attractive and I will die on this hill. ‘Abbott’ gave us the opportunity to make it attractive. So it wasn’t Quinta Brunson [criadora da série] that made me steal my heart. She was giving people the opportunity to see the man they see every day, like this. [outra] module”.
