The Happy 94th Academy Awards is now in the rearview mirror as the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has issued campaign rules and regulations governing the 95th Academy Awards on March 12, 2023.
Some of the most notable changes are as follows:
mandate
After two cycles formed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the academy is now returning to its traditional allowable calendar year period and theatrical release requirement. The feature film must have a qualifying theatrical release date of January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022. Placing a film in the academy screening room, a streaming service for academy members only, will no longer be a rating method once the vast majority of cinemas have reopened. However, the academy will continue to make a pandemic decision to allow film promotion not only in Los Angeles County or New York, but also in the Gulf area; Chicago; Miami; Or Atlanta. This applies to general entry categories as well as documentaries and short films.

The board also updated the academy’s regulations, which govern how companies and individuals can sell films and achievements to academy members. While the academy screening room remains on site, companies and individuals can now, under certain conditions, send digital links to materials directly to voters. However, film synopses may no longer contain credits as film companies will now have the opportunity to submit credits to the academy screening room before nominations begin.

The Oscars for Best Documentary and Documentary Feature Film were nominated for “Documentary Feature Film” and “Documentary Short Film”, respectively.

Musicals continue to be reborn, a decision was made to prohibit submission of more than three songs from the same film for consideration in the Best Original Song category.

Film backers looking to enter the sound category must now make their films available to Sound Branch members, especially when the film’s release date is after the start of the pre-voting cycle. Applications for exemption from this rule in special circumstances must be received by November 15, 2022.
