Like many of us, Ana de Armas prefers to listen to series and movies in their original language, with or without subtitles. In fact, she has just confessed that watching ‘Friends’ in English (and specifically Chandler’s character) made her learn more and better the language.
This weekend, the Cuban actress Ana de Armas, recently nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for her role in ‘Blonde’, the Netflix biopic about Marilyn Monroe, was the star host of ‘Saturday Night Live’, one of the most watched and veteran nightly shows in the United States.
In the opening monologue, Ana de Armas told the occasional juicy anecdote. In addition to starting in Spanish, He reviewed how this last great year had gone and then went on to detail how it is possible to master a new language, English, after arriving in the United States from Cuba.
“I was born in Cuba, I came to the United States at the age of 26 and I learned English like everyone who comes to this country: watching Friends”, Arms said. “Who would have thought that the best English tutor would be Chandler Bing? Look at me now. Am I better at English?” The phrase refers to the catchphrase made popular by the character Chandler, played by Matthew Perry.
With a beautiful look of a black leather minidress and loose, natural hair, parted in the middle, Ana de Armas assured: “I’m proud to become an American citizen because when I moved here, everyone was very welcoming,” said. De Armas then recalled a “kind gesture” by actor Robert De Niro, with whom she starred in her first film in the United States, ‘Hands of Stone’ (2016).
“One day on the set he said to me: ‘I may go to Cuba soon. If I do, I’ll say hello to your family,'” de Armas said. “Then one day, out of the blue, I get a call from my dad. He was hysterical. I’m like, ‘Dad, what’s wrong?’ And he’s like, ‘Robert De Niro just came to visit me at work’.” Imagine the moment! And De Armas continued: “My father was very proud of me and would be proud to see me on this stage today. I feel very lucky to be here.”
To Ana de Armas We will see her starting Friday the 21st on Apple TV+, starring in the romantic action comedy ‘Ghosting’ with Chris Evans. He plays Cole, an easygoing guy, who falls head over heels for the enigmatic Sadie (Armas), who, to his shock, turns out to be a secret agent.
