Ashley Graham opens up about how she lost her baby and almost died in childbirth

At the beginning of the year, Ashley Graham became a mother for the second time – she and her husband had twins. However, the birth of babies almost cost the life of Graham herself. Personal essay for Glamor, the model shared the details of a night she’ll never forget for the first time.

It was 2 am when my contractions started. At 3:45 I went to the toilet – Malachi showed up just as my doula came to help him be born. After two hours and seven minutes, Roman was already in the bath of my apartment – we didn’t even have enough time to prepare a special bath for childbirth, because everything happened so quickly, the model recalls.

But moments of joy quickly turned into fear when Ashley passed out. She later learned that she was bleeding heavily.

All I remember is the feeling of a light touch on my cheek. Later I learned that at that moment they hit me on the cheeks, trying to bring me to my senses, and my husband Justin prayed in my ear. I saw darkness and something like stars…

When Ashley woke up, her midwife and a team of professionals tried to reassure her that she was fine. However, Ashley knew something was wrong.

At that moment, they didn’t want to go into details, but I looked around the room, saw blood literally everywhere, and let out this deep inner cry – an emotional release from the chaos that I had just experienced. The midwives asked me if I could get up and go to bed. I could not. I couldn’t sit or even crawl. So they took a double sheet, laid me on it, and dragged me down the hallway to the guest room, where I had a cot that I could barely roll onto. Thank God, the twins were all right, and I lay in this bed for four days in a row. I couldn’t walk for a week. And I didn’t leave the house for almost two months.

Ashley shared another sad episode in her essay. After the birth of her first child and before the birth of the twins, the model was expecting another child. The pregnancy ended tragically – in February 2021, Ashley lost her baby.

I haven’t shared this until now, but I got pregnant in January 2021, my husband’s birthday. Since this was my second pregnancy, she started showing up early and we were so excited. But at the end of February I had a miscarriage. It was devastating; This is one of the biggest losses of my life to date. At that moment, I realized what many other mothers had gone through. I already had a child, and looking at him was the only way to ease my pain, and yet the loss was so acute. I can’t even imagine how heartbreaking this must be for women who haven’t had children yet and for those who have had multiple miscarriages. Yet the world expects us to move on and deal with our grief with dignity.

Remember that Graham announced her second pregnancy in the middle of July. And in September, she told the world that she would become a mother of many children – it turns out that she is expecting twins, and two boys. The children’s father is director of photography Justin Erwin. Ashley and Justin celebrated their 11th wedding anniversary in 2021. their eldest son Isaac is now two years old. He was born at the very beginning of the pandemic – January 18, 2020.
