Rated 4.1 out of 5 stars and released almost four decades ago, Aliens Returns is one of the best opus of the famous sci-fi saga (behind only the original feature film directed by Ridley Scott in 1979).
Tension on the set
Directed by James Cameron (who had just directed his first Terminator), this sequel saw Ripley rescued by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation and accompanied by a regiment of Marines to a new threat on the Xenomorph home planet.
But despite the popularity the film has enjoyed since its release, producing this second installment wasn’t easy for Cameron, as Sigourney Weaver recently revealed during a panel at New York Comic Con. Entertainment Weekly). The main problem? Considerable tension between the filmmaker and the rest of the team, who maintained a genuine distrust of him.
“They had a certain posture”
“I remember they really liked Ridley And they wanted Ridley to direct this second movie. They didn’t know who James Cameron was. I didn’t really know myself. I thought he wrote a great script.”The soon-to-be Avatar 3 actor explained that Cameron would hold test screenings for the team at the end of the workday, but no one would go there.
“They had a certain posture and it took them a while to get used to it. (…) I liked James right away, so it was pretty easy for me to walk on set and say, “Look, I love Ridley too, but this guy wrote this movie called The Terminator, and he knows what he’s doing. He has a natural talent.”
Fortunately, things eventually calmed down between Cameron and the rest of the team, allowing the director to sign on for the legendary action and sci-fi film.
