Yana Churikova – about the legendary “Star Factory” and the golden rules of show business

Yana, this year marks the 20th anniversary of the “Star Factory” – a project that you led from the first to the last season. Do you remember how it all began? Did your instinct for success work?

It all started with the fact that I was invited to the casting of the leading project. For me, this was already the second casting of Channel One, before that I was in the Good Morning program. And I went there just like another one. Probably 10 more people took part in this casting besides me. These were actors, KVN players … We were all given a common task: we had to simulate a live interview and do something else – I don’t remember. After we parted ways, they promised to call us back. Actually, that’s how it started for me.

As for the question “Did my instinct for success work for me” – I should have probably felt that this is a super cool project. If that’s the question, then yes, it worked. I have never been called to a casting in my life. I led all the programs that I led, simply because there were no other options. (Laughs) And this was only the second casting in my life, so I thought, yes, if the project is so powerful, if this is a whole casting of hosts, then it will be something really cool.

“Factory” is called a revolution in the music world. And not by accident. Many graduates of the project are still in demand and loved by the public. What do you think is the secret of success and why are the finalists of new musical projects so quickly forgotten?

The success of “Factory” as a project, or rather, the success of graduates, very many graduates, after the finale of the television part is explained by the fact that it was focused on the production of artists on a turnkey basis. This is an artist with a ready-made repertoire, which is written for him, and, accordingly, the artists have something to perform at concerts with. And this is still the main income of an artist in our country, if this artist works according to the 360-degree scheme and is released with his own songs, and not with covers. Further, if he has the right vein, with a producer or on his own, he can continue his development in the world of show business, “Factory” gives a very good start.

And why are the finalists of other musical projects so quickly forgotten … Well, I can judge by the projects that I see, in particular, for example, “Voice”, where people sing cover versions of other people’s songs. This is not their own repertoire, the emphasis is solely on the voice. And an artist is not only a voice, but also a repertoire and management around him. Therefore, “Factory” in this regard was an ideal platform for the show business industry.

Why do you think now, when technologies are so advanced that they allow a lot, there is no such super cool project where everyone would live “behind glass”?

Precisely because technology and social networks are so developed now. When, in principle, the whole life turned into a big reality show. No one makes a secret out of his life anymore, you can spy on everyone, but earlier it gave a wow effect, an effect of surprise, and television at some point took advantage of this. That’s all. Now there will be no loud effect, as it was then. Actually, it was the appearance of the first reality shows that contributed to the fact that the whole world turned into a big reality show.

You said on social networks that the upcoming concert, where graduates of different seasons will gather, is primarily about nostalgia and reminiscing. And what are the brightest moments in your memory during those ten seasons?

Nostalgia and memories are really good. This is what the show “Factory with Yana Chu” is based on, which can be found in my VK public. It is just about how the graduates of the project, teachers and producers come, and together we remember what happened once upon a time, and, of course, has not yet been told. So better than my guests and myself in these issues, I’m afraid I won’t answer you. Look – there are a lot of interesting things and not only for fans of the project.

Are you friends with project alumni? With whom have you developed a warm relationship, and with whom do you just keep in touch?

There is such a thing as a “factory” brotherhood. And even if you are not friends with someone, then you meet after a while, and you do not need prefaces. This is a great feeling and it is worth a lot. You can not be friends, you can not call each other every day, but when you meet, hug warmly and get extremely joyful feelings from this meeting.

If you were asked to name the three main rules of show business, without which you will not become popular (or you will, but you will be quickly forgotten)?

The first (and most boring) rule is to plow. Nothing will happen if you don’t plow yourself. Illustrations of this beautiful rule can be found on the Star Factory project. Any “manufacturer”, who quickly took off and is now forgotten, is a person who at some point decided that life would do everything for him

Rule number two – you definitely need to navigate the new trends of the profession that you have chosen for yourself. Unfortunately, many “manufacturers”, again, are an illustration of this trend. The contract with the producer ended – the people disappeared. No, if you want to stay in music, take fate into your own hands and … And here, in fact, rule number three arises: you only need yourself. So think about how you want to develop: improve your management, do PR and promotion yourself.
