According to the 33-year-old actress, things got even more complicated when she was forced to promote projects she had no control over. “The thing that I found really difficult was having to go out and sell something that I didn’t have much control over,” declared.

“To stand in front of a movie and have every reporter be able to say, ‘How does this align with your vision?’ It was very difficult having to be the face and spokesperson for productions that I couldn’t get involved in the process.”Watson explained.

I was held accountable in a way that I started to find really frustrating, because I had no voice, no opinion. And I started realizing that I just wanted to be faced with things where if someone criticized me, I could say, in a way that didn’t make me hate myself, ‘Yeah, I screwed up, it was my decision. I should have done it better.”

During the hiatus, Emma wrote and directed a short film for Prada, something new for her. “People always told me I should direct and produce, even when I was in it [Harry] Potter”, she said.

I was concerned that it was just technical, not creative, and that I couldn’t bring what I think is probably my ability. (…) Being a director seemed unattainable. I don’t think I trusted that. I know he sounds weird. I mean, I grew up on a movie set.”

Emma, who hasn’t ruled out a return to the big screen, has also hinted that she’s been asked to direct a music video, however she hasn’t revealed the new artist. Now, the star wants to find a way to continue her work without “going into robot mode”

But I’m happy to sit back and wait for the next right thing. I love what I do. It’s finding a way to do that without having to fragment into different faces and people. And I don’t want to go into robot mode anymore.”
