Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were involved in a ‘near-disastrous’ car chase with a group of paparazzi.
The events happened this Tuesday night, March 16 in New York, after the couple attended the Women of Vision Awards, held at the Ziegfeld Theater.
What happened to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle?
In a statement sent to outlets like People and Page Six, a representative for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle explained their version of what happened.
“Last night the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Mrs (Doria) Ragland (the mother of the expensive actress) were involved in a near disastrous car chase at the hands of a group of very aggressive paparazzi,” he said.
It noted that the pursuit “lasted more than two hours” and that it “resulted in multiple near misses” involving other “motorists on the road, pedestrians and two members of the local police”.
“While being a public figure carries a level of public interest, it should never come at the expense of anyone’s safety,” the letter states.
“The dissemination of these images, given the manner in which they were obtained, encourages a highly intrusive practice that is dangerous for all involved,” he adds.
According to reports, Prince Harry, Meghan and her mother boarded their vehicle to return to a friend’s apartment where they were staying.
Apparently there were half a dozen cars, with tinted windows, that followed his car, back onto a one-way street and walking on the sidewalk.
Despite the fact that two uniformed officers confronted the photographers asking them to stop, they continued to take pictures, talk on the phone and drive.
In this regard, the New York Police Department assured: “(We are) assisting the private security team to protect (the Dukes).”
“There was a large group of journalists who made their transport a challenge. (They) reached their destination and there were no clashes, reports, injuries or arrests,” they added.
Chris Sanchez, a staff member who looks after the son of King Charles III and Markle, revealed to CNN that he had “never seen or experienced anything like it”.
“The public was in danger at various points. It could have been fatal. They jumped curbs and red lights. At one point they blocked the limousine (in which the couple was travelling) and started taking pictures until we got out,” he said.
He also confirmed that, after the incident, Prince Harry and his wife were “scared, exhausted, but relieved to be back (in the apartment)”.
Princess Diana, mother of Prince Harry, died in a pursuit
On August 31, 1997, Princess Diana, mother of the Duke of Sussex, was killed in a car accident in Paris, as the driver of her vehicle tried to escape the following paparazzi.
In his memoir Spare, Prince Harry recounted how when he was 23 he walked through the same tunnel in which his mother was killed while watching the 2007 Rugby World Cup semi-final.
“I told myself I wanted to close, but really (I didn’t). “Deep down, I expected to feel in that tunnel what I felt when JLP (Jamie Lowther Pinkerton, his former private secretary) handed me the police files: disbelief,” he recounted.
“On the contrary, that was the night when all doubts were removed. She’s dead, I thought. Oh my God, he really is gone forever,” she said.
In October 2019, he shared that his “deepest fear is that history will repeat itself” with Meghan Markle. “I lost my mother and now I see my wife a victim of the same powerful forces,” he said in a letter.
