Just months after his heartbreaking layoff, Dennis Carvalho was left between life and death in a hospital’s intensive care unit
“It is inevitable to have a certain regret,” Dennis Carvalho said in a statement to Veja magazine editor Sofia Cerqueira. The soap opera director was referring to Globo’s firing in June 2022.
On the channel where he started out as an actor, he has directed hits that have become teledrama classics such as ‘Dancin’ Days’, ‘Malu Mulher’, ‘Vale Tudo’, ‘Anos Rebeldes’ and ‘Celebridade’.
The dismissal after 47 years was already foreseen. “It wasn’t a surprise. Every time we see news of fired talent, and I knew it could get to me. The question was who and how had communicated to me that I was no longer useful”.
The person responsible for the firing built his trajectory on Globo by intertwining it with that of Dennis himself. “Ricardo Waddington, who was my assistant and learned a lot from me, called me into the room and said, ‘We’re not renewing your contract, dear. We prefer to call you for the right job, okay?’ ‘Okay,’ I said, and walked away.
Together, the two worked on the direction of ‘Selva de Pedra’, ‘Roda de Fogo’, ‘O Dono do Mundo’, among other productions.
While Dennis continued as core director, Waddington became his boss when he took over at Globo Studios. He will leave his office in June, theoretically in agreement with the broadcaster’s top management.
Also in the interview with Veja, Dennis Carvalho said he believed the broadcaster’s new contractual policy was “hasty” and “unfair”. Most of the actors who had a long-term contract didn’t get a renewal.
At age 75, the celebrated director is recovering from a serious health problem that left him in a coma for weeks after collapsing late last year. The pneumonia spawned a widespread infection. Even his heart was hurt. “I have a second chance.”
